Micro-nutrient requirements for anaerobic digestion of concentrated industrial effluents
Expanded Title:The study aimed to develop a theoretical model of the controlling factors of the distribution of metals in anaerobic digester mixed liquor, in order to manage the dosing of micro-nutrients in the most cost effective manner. Initially the project was to use available experimental data to refine the model, which only considered mineral precipitation, by including adsorption of metals onto the biomass. Although this goal was achieved successfully, and the indications were that it did improve the model, the conversion of sulphate to sulphide during anaerobic digestion was considered to have a crucial effect on the results, due to the extremely low solubility of the metal sulphides. This left the assessment through modelling, of sulphide, as a key uncertainty in understanding the dynamics of the micronutrient metals in the anaerobic digestor system the chief outcome of the investigation.
