Overview

The Water Research Commission (WRC) builds stakeholder-centred partnerships that advance knowledge, innovation and practical solutions for South Africa’s water sector.

Through national, regional and international collaboration, the WRC supports joint learning, research and innovation, capacity development and strategic engagement to strengthen water security and sustainable development.

The WRC partnership opportunities are built around four key pillars:

WRC 2025–2030 Strategy

Aligned to the WRC 2025–2030 Strategy, these partnerships connect the Commission with government, academia, science councils, service providers, funders, regional networks and global institutions. Together, we help shape research, development and innovation priorities, support evidence-based decision-making and deliver impact across the water value chain.

Internationally, the WRC prioritises Pan-African collaboration and South-South cooperation to support climate-resilient water systems, inclusive development and shared learning.

This work contributes to national priorities as well as broader continental and global goals, including SDG 6, African Union Agenda 2063, the Africa Water Vision 2025 and related policy priorities, as well as other regional and continental agendas aimed at building a water-secure continent. The WRC works through both formal and informal partnership models to expand collaboration, share expertise, and mobilise resources.

The Partnership Strategy focuses on five core outcomes:

Position the WRC as a trusted knowledge partner in water and sanitation research, development and innovation.

Strengthen thought leadership and evidence-based policy support.

Promote the sharing of credible knowledge and innovative products.

Build research, development and innovation capability across the water sector.

Broker partnerships that accelerate research, technology and innovation collaboration.
